State Claims Accountant Falsely Identifies Self as CPA

The state of Maine has issued a warning about an accountant they say is claiming to be CPA under false terms.

Valerie Alex does admit to failing to remove a notation on her website and a sign stating that she is a CPA, but claims that she has done no work that would require her to have a CPA certification.

In a statement by the commissioner of the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation it was revealed that Alex has not been licensed as a Certified Public Accountant since 2010. Her certificate was revoked. Alex also did not comply with an order issued in February 2012 because of her neglect in filing an income tax return. She also did not supply requested documentation to the attorney general’s office. She was ordered to remove the signage from her office this past September and she was also ordered to shut down her website.

Alex claims that the only work she has been doing is tax returns and that this does not require that she have a CPA certificate.

Consumers who would like to check for proper licensing in a variety of industries including accounting can check the state’s website at maine.gov/pfr.
