Accountant Charged with Tax Evasion

A Gretna accountant received 5 years for tax evasion. When the judge asked whether she was being sentenced for tax evasion or theft, he was told, “both”.

Caroline K. Richardson was sentenced primarily for tax evasion.  She pled guilty to three charges. In addition the judge was allowed to take into consideration the reason she was evading taxes. This ‘reason’ was the fact that she stole $4.1 million from Colombo Candy and Tobacco of Omaha. She was sentenced to 5 years, but will likely serve half of that.

Defense attorney James Schaefer is worried that his client might actually be charged twice for the same crime. She is currently facing charges in Douglas County due to the $4.1 million embezzlement. The prosecution claims that the two counties filing charges is appropriate. In the Douglas County case, Richardson faces three counts of theft, with each carrying a possible prison term of 20 years.

Richardson is also facing civil lawsuits for the crimes. Her lawyer expects that the theft charges will be resolved quickly as Richardson has admitted to her crimes.
